
GUILFORD'S JACK JENSEN NAMED DIVISION III GOLF COACH OF THE YEAR
Greensboro, NC (05/24/02) -- The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) selected Guilford College coach Jack Jensen as its 2002 NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year May 24. The announcement marks Jensen's second national coach of the year award and the sixth in Guilford's athletics history. He becomes the school's first national coach of the year since he received the 1989 NAIA Men's Golf Coach of the Year prize.
Jensen
recently completed his 26th season as Guilford's golf coach by guiding the
Quakers to the 2002 NCAA Division III National Golf Championship in May. The
performance marked the school's second national golf title as Jensen coached
the 1989 Quakers' squad to the NAIA national crown. Jensen also coached
Guilford's 1973 NAIA men's basketball national champions.
In addition to two national titles, Guilford also has four second-place efforts at national golf tournaments under Jensen's guidance, including a second-place finish at the 2001 Division III Championship where Wisconsin-Eau Claire edged the Quakers by one stroke. For his efforts, Jensen received the 2001 Sun Mountain Sports Division III District 3 Coach of the Year Award. Guilford also finished second at the 1985, 1986 and 1987 NAIA National Championships.
A school-record three Guilford players earned All-America honors at the 2002 national tourney for the second straight year, including sophomore Dave Patterson, this year's national runner-up, Andrew Biggadike '02 and senior Savio Nazareth. Under Jensen’s direction, 20 Guilford students have received 30 performance and eight academic All-America honors. Lee Porter '89, a two-time All-American and 1988 World University Games gold medalist, plays on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour. Bill Brooks '83 and Rob Odom '87 were the NAIA Tournament medalists in 1983 and 1986, respectively. Odom and Mike Beaver '88 played on the U.S. team in the 1986 World University Games in Italy, where Odom won the gold medal with a first-place finish. Three-time All-American Chris Haarlow '91 qualified for the 1994 U.S. Open.
Jensen joined Guilford’s athletics staff as an assistant basketball coach in 1965 and compiled a 386-392 overall record as the Quakers’ head men’s basketball coach from 1970-99. He coached future National Basketball Association (NBA) players Bob Kauffman '68, M.L. Carr '73, World B. Free and Greg Jackson '74. A member of the NAIA and Guilford College Sports Halls of Fame, Jensen was the second person to coach two different teams to NAIA national titles.
Jensen is a six-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golf Coach of the Year and a seven-time NAIA District 26 Golf Coach of the Year. Guilford finished the season ranked first in the final GCAA Division III national poll and first in the May 28 Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head Standings.
