Greensboro, NC (04/19/02) -- Guilford's men's golf team ranks first in the April 16 Golfstat Division III Head-to-Head standings and second in the Precept Division III Coaches Poll, released April 18 by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Quakers have maintained their second-place spot in the Precept poll in each of the past three biweekly polls. Methodist holds the top spot, followed by Guilford, Greensboro, Oglethorpe and Gustavus Adolphus.

Golfstat's head-to-head standings are based on round-robin, head-to-head comparisons against Division III teams. The Quakers have a 223-1 record in the standings and are 12-1 versus top-25 teams. Greensboro, Oglethorpe, Methodist and Savannah A&D round out the top five in the Golfstat standings.

Guilford has placed third or higher in nine of 11 tournaments this season with wins in two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matches. The defending national runners-up took third at the 31st Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate April 5-7 and finished three strokes behind tourney champ Oglethorpe. The Quakers placed second among 19 mostly Division I teams at the Treasure Coast Heroes/World Trade Center Heroes Classic March 15-16 in Port St. Lucie, FL. Guilford claimed second in the 19-team field behind tournament host St. John's (NY), which won the team title by 22 strokes. The Quakers also took second at the Pine Needles/Pfeiffer Invitational Feb. 25-26 in Southern Pines, NC.

Senior Savio Nazareth (Orlando, FL/Dr. Phillips) leads Guilford with a 72.38 stroke average through 21 rounds, which is nearly half a shot less than his school-record average (72.80) of a year ago. He won the Uwharrie Point/Johnny Palmer Invitational Sept. 18-19 and has finished no lower than sixth 10 times this year. Nazareth is ranked second among Division III golfers according to the April 18 Golfstat rankings and 90th among golfers from all divisions. Sophomore Dave Patterson (Fort Pierce, FL/Fort Pierce Central), who finished second among 155 golfers at Camp Lejeune, stands second among Guilford's leaders with a 74.24 stroke average, just ahead of senior Andrew Biggadike (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) (74.26). Guilford averages 298.00 team strokes per round through 21 rounds.

Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers pursue their third ODAC title in as many years next Monday when it opens play in the two-day ODAC Tournament at the Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield, VA.
