
GUILFORD'S PORTER QUALIFIES FOR PGA TOUR
LaQuinta, CA (12/04/00) -- Guilford College alumnus Lee Porter '89 earned a spot on the 2001 PGA Tour with a 21st-place finish at the pressure-packed six-round PGA Qualifying Tournament Monday. Porter shot a three-under-par 69 in Monday's sixth and final round to finish with an 18-under 414.
Porter, a Greensboro resident, was one of 36
players to earn their tour cards at the tournament played on the Jack Nicklaus Tournament
Course and Jack Nicklaus Private Course. Australian Stephan Allen took medalist honors
with a 32-under-par 400.
Porter, 34, spent the 2000 season on the buy.com Tour, where he ranked 44th on the money list in 25 events with two top-10 finishes. He finished 32nd in the 1998 and 2000 U.S. Open Championships. Porter played on the PGA Tour in 1993 and from 1997-99.
While at Guilford, Porter played four years for the Quakers under head coach Jack Jensen and earned NAIA All-American honors in 1987 and 1988. He ranks second on Guilford's career stroke average list (75.05) and played on the Quakers' 1989 NAIA national championship squad.
