GUILFORD REPEATS AS ODAC GOLF CHAMPIONS
Bluefield, VA (04/24/01) -- Guilford College junior Savio Nazareth (Orlando, FL/Phillips (Brevard J.C.)) shot one over-par 71 Tuesday and claimed medalist honors as his Quakers captured the 2001 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golf Championship at Fincastle Country Club. Guilford fired a second-round 303 for a two-day total of 607, two strokes ahead of runner-up Washington and Lee's 609.
Nazareth, the league's Player of the Year, carded Tuesday's low round of 71. Lynchburg's Justin Heimer finished second with a two-day 150, a shot better than Guilford's Andrew Biggadike and Washington and Lee's Chuck Green and Chip Campbell. The top six finishers received All-Tournament recognition. Guilford's Nazareth, Biggadike, Clint Fields, and Andrew Eversole earned All-ODAC honors.
Washington and Lee, which sat five shots ahead of Guilford after Monday's first round, shot 310 Tuesday and placed second with a 609. Hampden-Sydney rounded out the top three with a score of 619.
The title is Guilford's second in two years after capturing the title last season. It marks Guilford's fifth ODAC golf championship since joining the league in 1992 and its third in four years. Head coach Jack Jensen and his club await selection to the NCAA Division III Championships May 6-10.
