GUILFORD GOLFERS FARE WELL IN LOCAL US OPEN QUALIFYING
Greensboro, NC (05/17/01) Fresh off of a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Mens Golf Championships, Guilford junior Andrew Biggadike (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) advanced to the sectional qualifying round of the 2001 U.S. Open Golf Tournament Monday. Junior teammate Savio Nazareth (Orlando, FL/Phillips) missed advancing out of local qualifying by two strokes.
Biggadike, a two-time All-American, shot an even-par 72 at the Hawks Nest Golf Club in Vero Beach, FL. Three professional players, including 11-time PGA Tour winner Andy Bean, also shot 72, which set up a four-man playoff for the three remaining qualifying slots. Biggadike chipped in for a birdie on his first playoff hole to clinch a berth in the June 4 U.S. Open sectional qualifying event at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, MD.
Nazareth overcame a sluggish start in his round at the local qualifying round at Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, FL, Monday. A third-team All-American and the 2001 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year, he bogeyed the first three holes, but rallied to shoot two-under-par for the rest of the round and finished with a one-over 73. The last alternate from the Weston Hills event shot 71.
Both players earned Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-District 3 laurels and played key roles on Guilfords 2001 Division III national runner-up and ODAC championship squad. Nazareth recorded the lowest single-season stroke average in school history (72.80) while Biggadike averaged 73.81 strokes per round, the third-lowest total in Guilford history. Both players return for their senior seasons next fall for head coach Jack Jensen's team.
