GUILFORD'S PORTER FINISHES 32ND AT U.S. OPEN
Pebble Beach, CA - A one-under par 70 vaulted Guilford College alumnus Lee Porter '89 up to 32nd place in the 100th U.S. Open June 18. Porter shot 297 (+13) for the four rounds, but was one of only seven players to shoot two sub-par rounds on the challenging Pebble Beach Links Course.
The three-time Guilford All-American sat in 11th place after shooting 70 in Friday's second round for a two-day 144. The rugged conditions of Saturday's third round contributed to Porter's 12-over 83, which effectively moved him out of contention for a top finish.
Porter responded with the eighth-best score in Sunday's final round of competition. He picked up his third birdie of the afternoon on the 543-yard 18th hole to finish one under.
Porter, who also finished 32nd in his only other U.S. Open appearance in 1998, collected $28,247 for his performance. He now returns home to play in the Buy.Com Greensboro Open June 25-29 at the Sedgefield Country Club.
