
GUILFORD GRIDDERS EARN ACADEMIC HONORS
Greensboro, NC— Two Guilford College football players earned spots on the Verizon Academic All-District III College Division Football Team Thursday. Junior John Alt (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Nova) and senior Luke White (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) each received Academic-All District laurels for the second straight year and moved into consideration for selection to the College Division Academic All-America Team, which will be announced December 10.
The district team is comprised of football players from Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.20 grade point average. Selections are made by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Guilford’s
punter, Alt started nine of 10 games this season and averaged 35.6 yards
per kick in 52 punts. He had five punts that were downed inside the opponent's
20 yard-line. Alt made a long kick of 50 yards in Guilford's September 8
win over Methodist and averaged 41.5 yards per kick in six punts against
Hampden-Sydney September 22. A two-time second team All-Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) football selection, Alt earned Academic All-ODAC honors
in 2000 and 2001. He received's Guilford's 2000 Courtney Management Award and is
a regular on Guilford's Student-Athlete Honor-Roll. A dean’s list business
management major, Alt was a 2001 preseason All-America selection.
White
finished his senior campaign on a Quakers’ offensive line that finished
second in the ODAC with an average of 192.9 rushing yards per game. He started
the first four contests of the year at defensive end (where he played his first
three seasons) and made 15 tackles and one sack. He moved to the offensive line
for the Quakers' fifth game and started the last six games at right tackle. A
four-year starter, White regularly appears on Guilford’s
Student-Athlete Honor-Roll. He serves as a youth pastor at a Greensboro church
and received the Quakers' 2000 Golden Helmet Award, which is the highest award
given to a Guilford football player. A dean’s list history major, White is
a two-time academic all-conference selection and was an honorable-mention
All-ODAC football selection last year.
Alt and White helped Coach Mike Ketchum’s Quakers win their last three games to finish with a 4-6 overall (3-3 ODAC) and a second-place finish in the conference.
