GUILFORD'S BATTS NAMED ODAC DEFENSIVE FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Greensboro, NC (10/07/00) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selected Guilford College freshman O.J. Batts (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill) as its Defensive Football Player of the Week for games of October 7, the league announced Monday. Batts becomes Guilford's first recipient of the league's weekly football awards this season.
A 5-10,
170-pound cornerback, Batts made a school-record three interceptions in Guilford's
28-24 ODAC win at Randolph-Macon Saturday. His first two interceptions led to Guilford
touchdowns, while his third came on the Quakers' goal line with 40 seconds left in the
game. Batts also forced a fourth-quarter fumble on a Yellow Jackets' kickoff
return, which nearly led to another Guilford score and helped the Quakers run down the
clock. He added three solo tackles and a pass breakup to his three-interception afternoon.
Batts worked his way into Guilford's starting lineup in the second game of the season and ranks sixth on the team with 21 tackles (9 solo) through five games. He leads the Quakers with four pass deflections. Batts made a career-high six tackles (3 solo) in Guilford's September 23 loss at Hampden-Sydney.
Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers (1-4, 1-2 ODAC) begin a three-game home stand this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest against league-rival Bridgewater College (4-1, 1-1 ODAC).
