GUILFORD GRIDDERS EARN ACADEMIC HONORS
Greensboro, NC (11/10/00)-- Three Guilford College football players earned spots on the Verizon Academic All-District III College Division Football Team Friday. Sophomore John Alt (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Nova), junior Lee Massey (St. Cloud, FL/St. Cloud) and junior Luke White (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) move into consideration for selection to the College Division Academic All-America Team, which will be announced December 5.
The district team is comprised of football players from Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.20 grade point average. Selections are made by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Guilford's
punter, Alt ranks 14th among this weeks' NCAA Division III leaders with a 39.6
yards per kick average. He stands second in the league, less than half a yard behind
Catholic's Mike Fleet. Alt leads the conference with 54 punts and has placed 11
kicks inside the opponents' 20-yard line. He has eight kicks of 50 or more yards,
including a career-long 66-yarder in the Quakers' 31-28 win at Randolph-Macon. A dean's
list business management major, Alt was a second team all-south performer last year
and received Academic All-ODAC laurels.
Massey
has been one of Guilford's best offensive lineman in his three seasons. The 6-1, 260-pound
guard has been a three-year starter. This season he has played in all nine games, starting
eight. In 1998 he was the top lineman for the Quakers. Massey is a three-time
member Guilford's student-athlete honor roll, as well as a dean's list education major.
A defensive
lineman, White has started in all nine games for the Quakers. He leads the team in
sacks with 2.5 for a total of 30 yards. White ranks second in tackles for a loss
with six totaling a loss of 32 yards. Last season he was an honorable-mention
all-conference selection and an All-Academic all-conference pick. White, a history
major, is a two-time member of the school's student-athlete honor roll and a youth pastor
at a local church in Greensboro.
Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers close out the 2000 season November 11 at home against Greensboro College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
