The dormant Team Black bats came to life with a bang in Guilford World Series Game 5 Wednesday. After mustering an attack that included only two runs over the first four games of the series, Team Black exploded for three runs on a single, two doubles and a triple in the bottom of the sixth off Cardinal starter and loser Anthony Ramakis to salvage the game and keep hopes alive in the series, which now stands at 3-2 in favor of Team Cardinal.

Ramakis had been cruising, allowing one run on five singles through five innings, but seemed to unravel after a one-out line drive by KC Chambers found its way between outfielders all the way to the fence for a triple. Andy Reed followed with his second RBI single of the game cutting the Cardinal lead to 3-2. After John Ludington struck out, back to back doubles by Joe Dooley and Jason Wynn gave Team Black their first last-inning lead since Game one.

Jeff Joyce, who entered the game in the sixth in relief of starter Joe Dooley and gave up what seemed to be a decisive third run, worked a perfect seventh to pick up his first victory of the series.

Team Cardinal continued to swing hot bats, garnering seven hits in the game, but Dooley and Joyce managed to spread them thin enough to facilitate the 4-3 final score. If Team Black had needed an offensive spark, they got it from Chambers and Reed, who were a combined 5 for 6 with two runs scored and two RBI on the day. Reed's three hits are a fall classic high, and Chambers' triple is one of only three hits for more than two bases in the series.

Notes: Eric Pelletier's hitting streak ended at three with an 0 for 2 day at the plate.... Team Cardinal's Steve Danis sprained his ankle in the first inning, and is likely out for the remainder of the series... Ramakis was a leading candidate for MVP until the Team Black sixth inning... Team Black's three runs in the sixth equalled their total for the previous 32 innings.... Both teams played well defensively, and, for the first time, all runs scored in the game were earned.. Joyce and Pelletier made the first two relief appearances of the series as both managers have been reluctant to go to the pen.
