The freshman out-pitched the upperclassman in Game Two of the Guilford Baseball World Series, as Anthony Ramakis fired a three-hit shutout allowing Team Cardinal to tie the best-of-seven series one game apiece with a 6-0 win.
Ramakis allowed only two base runners after a third-inning leadoff walk to Zach Whicker, one of which was Whicker himself in the fifth, but he was cut down trying to stretch a two-out double into a triple. Team Cardinal's relay throw from Josh Wolfe to Bryan Probst to Jason Davis beat the runner by two steps. Team Black co-coach Jeff Joyce sheepishly left the third-base coaching box for the dugout.
Ramakis' only other jam occurred in the second, as Joe Dooley drew a leadoff walk and was followed by a John Ludington single. But the 6'3" rookie from Annandale, VA, struck out the next two hitters. Following a walk to senior Andy Reed, Ramakis induced Jason Wynn to fly out, ending the rally.
On the flip side, Team Black's top draft pick, KC Chambers, struggled with his command at times, making it hard to work out of jams his fielders put him in. Chambers allowed three unearned runs through the first three innings, then proved his own worst enemy with two mental errors to let Team Cardinal add a solo run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to put the game away.
Offensively, Team Cardinal was led by Chris Butcher and Eric Pelletier with two hits each, and Bryan Probst who scored three times. The key at bat of the game may have been turned in by freshman outfielder, Gabe 'G-Man' Staub who grounded a 2-1 pitch back up the middle that Team Black SS Kevin Moore was unable to handle. Two runs scored on the play giving Team Cardinal a 3-0 cushion, all Ramakis would need.
