GUILFORD'S DANIS NAMED ODAC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Greensboro, NC (3/10/99) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selected Guilford College freshman Steve Danis (Moosup, CT/Plainfield) as its first Baseball Player of the Week of the 1999 season, the league announced Wednesday.

Danis leads Guilford and ranks fourth in the league with a .490 batting average. He has two or more hits in seven of his 15 games and is in the midst of a team-best nine-game hitting streak. The 6-0, 165-pound center fielder also leads the Quakers in runs (17), hits (24), doubles (7), triples (2), walks (9) and slugging percentage (.898). Danis started the week ranked third among the ODAC's slugging percentage leaders, fourth in doubles and triples per game and fifth in home runs per game. He stands second on the team with three homers and has nine runs batted in and six stolen bases to his credit.

Guilford's leadoff hitter, Danis has seven games of two hits or more, including a five-for-six performance against Mary Washington College February 27 - the most hits in a game by a Guilford player this year. He knocked in a career-high three runs in wins over Washington and Jefferson and Bates, homering in both contests. Danis homered in both games a March 5 doubleheader sweep of Washington and Jefferson.

Coach Gene Baker's team carries a four-game winning streak and a 7-8 overall record into this Saturday's ODAC opener with Bridgewater. The league's nine coaches picked the Eagles second in the preseason ODAC poll, one spot ahead of Guilford.
