GUILFORD'S REED EARNS ALL-SOUTH BASEBALL HONORS
Greensboro, NC (5/24/99) -- Guilford College senior Andy Reed (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) was named an honorable mention selection to the 1999 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-South Region Team Monday. Reed is Guilford's second All-South pick in as many years. Junior Kevin Moore (Colfax, NC/Southwest Guilford) earned honorable mention recognition in 1998.
Reed led Guilford's hitters with a .395 batting average, eight home runs and 31 runs batted in (RBI), all career-high totals, while splitting time at first base and catcher. A second team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) pick, he paced the Quakers with 47 hits and boasted a .655 slugging percentage. Reed batted .375 (18-48) in 16 ODAC games with two home runs and seven runs batted in. The 6-3, 185-pound senior ranked third among ODAC home run leaders, fourth in hitting and fifth in RBI through games of April 25. He totalled 13 multi-hit contests and had 10 games with two or more runs batted in.
Reed enjoyed a personal-best nine-game hitting streak this year, during which time he hit .484 (15-31). He homered twice in the Quakers' season-opening win over Bluefield (2/13) and in a 13-11 triumph over Williams College March 29. Reed plated a career-high four runners in a February 14 win over Division II Gannon University. For his efforts, Reed received Guilford's McBane Hitting Award and his teammates voted him the club's most valuable player.
Coach Gene Baker's team posted a 17-21 record in 1999, 6-10 in the ODAC. Reed is one of eight graduating seniors from the 1999 unit, but Baker expects 17 letter winners back in 2000.
