GUILFORD'S McCAULEY NAMED ODAC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Greensboro, NC (03/11/02) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selected Guilford sophomore A.J. McCauley (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) as its Baseball Player of the Week Monday for the week ending March 10. The announcement marks the sophomore's first ODAC Player of the Week honor and Guilford's first honoree of the 2002 season.

McCauley led the Quakers to a 5-0 week by hitting .565 in five games. The 5-10, 165-pound leftfielder extended his hitting steak to nine games and went 13 for 23 with 11 runs scored, two doubles, 11 runs batted in (RBI) and 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. McCauley set a career high for hits in a game with a 4-4 performance in Guilford's 8-5 win over league-rival Eastern Mennonite Mar. 10. He had a double in the victory and broke a 4-4 tie in the third inning with an RBI single. McCauley matched his personal best with three runs in the second game against the Royals, a 16-8 Guilford triumph. McCauley swiped four bases in both Guilford wins over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy earlier in the week and scored three times in each game. He also made his college pitching debut with a scoreless ninth inning in the Quakers' 17-6 win over the Merchant Marines Mar. 7.

With a league-high 18 stolen bases, McCauley ranks seventh on Guilford's single-season steals list after just 16 games. He stands second on the team with a .391 batting average and third with 16 runs scored. The left-handed leadoff batter has four doubles and leads the Quakers with nine multiple-hit games. McCauley was a second-team All-ODAC selection in 2001.

Coach Gene Baker's Quakers (11-5) are in the midst of a five-game winning streak and sit atop the ODAC standings with a 2-0 league record. Guilford has won 10 of its last 12 games, including nine straight at home. The Quakers host Southern Virginia Thursday (3/14) in a nonconference doubleheader before an ODAC twinbill at defending league runner-up Virginia Wesleyan Saturday (3/16).
