GUILFORD'S DOOLEY TAKES WEEKLY ODAC BASEBALL HONOR

Greensboro, NC (03/25/02) -- Guilford senior Joe Dooley (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Baseball Player of the Week Award for the week ending March 24, the league announced Monday. Dooley, a first-time Player of the Week recipient, joins sophomore teammate A.J. McCauley (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) as the two Quakers' players to earn the weekly prize this year.

Dooley, a 6-2, 215-pound right-handed pitcher, had a hand in all three of Guilford's ODAC wins last week. He went 1-0 with two saves and 13 strikeouts in nine innings over three appearances. Dooley struck out the side in the ninth inning of Guilford's 10-7 league win over Lynchburg last Friday. He notched his team-leading third save of the year Saturday by tossing a scoreless seventh inning in the first game of an ODAC twinbill with Randolph-Macon. Dooley threw a complete-game five-hitter in the nightcap, a 4-3 Guilford win. He struck out 10 and walked one in seven innings.

Dooley's efforts last week maintained his streak of earning a win or save in every appearance this season. He owns an 8-0 record with three saves and six complete games in 11 appearances. His 8-0 start is the best in Guilford's Division III history and has given him the 10th-highest single-season win total in school history. Dooley has a league-high 67 strikeouts in 51.1 innings with a 2.63 earned run average. Opposing hitters are batting .202 against him with 14 walks.

Dooley returned to Guilford from Division I George Mason last fall after pitching his first two seasons for the Quakers in 1999 and 2000. He went 3-1 in 13 appearances for the Patriots before coming back to Guilford for his senior year. A power pitcher, Dooley has been clocked in the low 90s and is Guilford's best professional pitching prospect since Chad Coward '00, who won the 2001 Pitcher of the Year Award for the Bakersfield Blaze in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' organization.

Coach Gene Baker's Quakers (16-8, 6-1 ODAC) sit in second place in the conference standings and have surpassed their win total of the 2001 season (15). Guilford has won 13 of its last 17 contests, including three straight. The Quakers meet league-rival Lynchburg Tuesday (03/26) and host Keuka (NY) in a nonconference game Wednesday (03/27) at 3:00 pm.
