Guilford’s Baker Notches 300th Baseball Coaching Win

Greensboro, NC (04/13/02) – Guilford College baseball coach Gene Baker won his 300th career contest in Guilford’s 11-3 win over Emory & Henry April 13 in the opening game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Guilford’s McBane Field. Entering the 2002 season, only 44 other active Division III baseball coaches had reached the 300-win milestone.

Now in his fifth season at Guilford and 15th overall, Baker won his 100th game as the Quakers’ skipper April 8 in a 13-5 win over Greensboro. His Guilford record stands at 102-96 and his overall mark is 301-452 through games of April 13. Baker spent five seasons as the head coach at Louisville from 1991-95 and coached the University of Northern Iowa baseball team from 1988-1990. He served as Bristol (TN) College’s head baseball coach in 1985 and 1986.

Baker’s Quakers are 24-10 overall, 9-3 in the ODAC. Guilford, ranked seventh in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association Division III South region poll, has won six straight games and 11 of its last 13. Guilford visits Virginia Intermont April 17 and closes the league season with a doubleheader at Washington and Lee April 20.
