QUAKERS PLACE SIX ON ALL-ODAC BASEBALL TEAMS

Greensboro, NC (05/08/02) -- A school-record six Guilford baseball players earned All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recognition Wednesday, according to a vote of the league's eight head coaches. Seniors Steve Danis (Summerville, SC/Plainfield (CT)) and Joe Dooley (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) joined junior Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) on the first-team squad. Senior Tim Huie (Ovideo, FL/Ovideo), sophomore A.J. McCauley (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) and junior R.J. Marks (Browns Summit, NC/Northeast Guilford) received second-team honors.

Danis, the Quakers' starting center fielder for the last four years, is hitting a career-high .368 with 51 runs, four homers, 30 stolen bases and 29 runs batted in (RBI). He ranks second in the league in steals, third in runs and ninth in hits. Danis has raised his school-record stolen bases mark to 85 and set Guilford's career hits (194) and runs (159) standards this year. His .346 career batting average ranks fourth in school history and his 99 RBI stand seventh. Danis enjoyed a career- and team-high 18-game hitting streak this season and posted 17 multiple-hit games. He smacked his second career grand slam in Guilford's 17-6 win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy March 7 and totaled a season- and career-high six RBI and four runs scored. Danis went 3-4 with a school-record five stolen bases in Guilford's 10-5 win at Virginia Intermont April 17.

Dooley (right) leads Division III with 12 wins, which ties the school's 26-year-old record. He owns a 12-3 mark with four saves and a 3.10 earned run average in 20 appearances. The right-hander has completed a school-record 11 games on the mound, including two shutouts, and won the league's Player of the Week Award for the week ending March 24. Dooley struck out an ODAC record-tying 118 batters (the second-highest total in school history) and limited opponents to a .228 batting average over 95 2/3 innings. He leads the ODAC in wins, strikeouts, saves, innings and shutouts. His 19 career wins stand sixth all time at Guilford, while his 10.19 strikeouts per nine innings ratio ranks first. He also places among the Quakers' career leaders in saves (2nd, 9), appearances (5th, 56), and strikeouts (4th, 223). Dooley returned to Guilford last August after spending the 2001 season pitching for Division I George Mason.

A second-team all-conference pick in 2001, Franklin made the first-team squad this year with a record-setting season. The Quakers' second baseman has belted a league record-tying nine triples and stands second in the league with a school-record 51 RBI. His nine triples rank among the NCAA Division III leaders and broke the former Guilford standard of seven set in 1966. A 2001 transfer from Division I Elon, he leads the league with a school-record 55 runs and has hit .342 with four homers and nine doubles in 43 games. The ODAC Player of the Week for the week ending April 14, Franklin leads the Quakers with 14 multiple-RBI games and has had two or more hits 20 times. He enjoyed a personal-best 14-game hitting streak during the year and went 4-5 with a two-run triple and a two-run homer in the Quakers' 11-10 win at Chowan Feb. 16. Franklin earned a spot on the 2002 All-ODAC Tournament team after hitting .263 with four RBI.

Huie (right) earned second team All-ODAC recognition in 2000 and returned to the all-star team after hitting .294 with a career-high six homers, nine doubles and 31 RBI in 39 games. The third baseman hit .353 with four homers and 14 RBI in 16 regular-season ODAC contests. Huie homered and doubled in back-to-back victories over Vassar and league-rival Eastern Mennonite. His two-out, three-run homer in the fifth inning broke open Guilford's April 8 win over Greensboro. Huie began his college career at Division II Pfeiffer, but has started the past three seasons with the Quakers, during which time he has hit .301 with nine homers and 71 RBI in 114 games.

A second-team all-conference honoree last season, McCauley broke Guilford's season records for stolen bases (31), at-bats (187), and hits (70) while batting .374 with 10 doubles and 35 RBI. The speedy sophomore leads the league in thefts and also ranks among the ODAC's best in hits (2nd) and runs (7th). The ODAC Player of the Week for the week ending March 10, McCauley has started all 44 Quakers' contests in left field and often bats in the leadoff spot. He has a team-best 21 multiple-hit contests, including a 4-for-4 showing in Guilford's 8-5 win over Eastern Mennonite March 10. McCauley also had four hits in the Quakers' ODAC Tournament victory over Virginia Wesleyan, which helped him earn a spot on the all-tourney team. His 45 steals in 75 games rank third on Guilford's career list.

Marks (right), a catcher, made the All-ODAC second team as a designated hitter. He led Guilford with seven homers and a .628 slugging percentage. Marks batted .358 and ranks second on the team with 12 doubles and two triples. He earned the league's Player of the Week Award for the week ending April 7 after hitting .733 in three Guilford wins. Marks had a school record-tying six hits, including two doubles and a homer, in the Quakers' 19-8 win at Roanoke and also has three more games with at least four hits. He ranked third on the club with 10 multiple-RBI contests and had two or more hits in 14 of his 38 games.

Head coach Gene Baker's club has tied the school record for wins in a season with a 30-14 campaign and set the school standard with a 12-4 ODAC mark. The Quakers placed second at the ODAC Tournament and await word of a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. The national tournament bids will be announced May 12. Guilford will co-host an NCAA Regional Tournament with the ODAC and the city of Winston-Salem May 16-19.
