RAMAKIS NAMED ODAC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Greensboro, NC (03/26/01) -- Guilford College junior Anthony Ramakis (Annandale, VA/Annandale) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Baseball Player of the Week Award for the week of March 19, the league announced Monday. The junior pitcher received the award for the first time in his career and is Guilford's initial recipient of the honor in 2001.

The Marlins entered the contest atop the league standings and owned a nine-game regular-season ODAC winning streak dating back to 2000. Ramakis yielded both Marlins' runs in the first inning and kept the visitors off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. He struck out a season-high six batters and walked four in raising his record to 2-2. Ramakis also struck out the side in a one-inning relief appearance in Guilford's 15-9 loss to Greensboro March 23.

Ramakis ranks second on the team in wins and third among Guilford pitchers with a 6.52 earned run average. He has 19 strikeouts in 29 innings and holds opponents to a team-low .259 batting average. He notched his first complete game February 23 in a 7-4 win over Division II Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

Coach Gene Baker's club starts the week with a 10-10 overall record and in sixth place in the ODAC with a 2-4 record. Guilford hosts league-rival Lynchburg Tuesday (3/27) at 3:00 PM on McBane Field. The Quakers visit Averett this Wednesday (3/28) at 3:00 PM before traveling to Randolph-Macon for a league doubleheader March 31 at noon.
