GUILFORD PAIR EARNS REGIONAL BASEBALL RECOGNITION

Greensboro, NC (05/23/00) -- Guilford College senior baseball players Kevin Moore (Colfax, NC/Southwest Guilford) and Chad Coward (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) represented the Quakers on the 2000 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-South Region squad, the ABCA announced Tuesday. In addition, Moore earned a place on the 2000 GTE Academic All-District III College Division Baseball team for the second time in three seasons.

The ABCA/Rawlings Division III All-America team will be announced Thursday, May 25, prior to the start of the Division III Baseball World Series in Appleton, WI. The GTE Academic All-America team, comprised of upper-class starters or key reserves with grade point averages (GPA) of 3.20 or higher, will be released June 6.

Guilford's starting left fielder, Moore hit a career-high .406 with 45 runs scored and 44 runs batted in. His career-high 12 home runs led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and marked the second-highest single-season total in school history. He became the 11th Guilford baseball player to hit .400 in a season and placed sixth on the Quakers' single-season batting average list. Moore led the ODAC in total bases (104) and ranked among the league leaders in hits (56), runs (45) and slugging percentage (.754). The three-time All-ODAC performer graduated earlier this month as the Quakers' career leader in home runs (39), RBI (157), doubles (37), hits (192) and runs scored (141). The dean's list mathematics major carried a 3.32 grade point average into the spring semester.

Coward.jpg (29489 bytes)Guilford's Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher this season, Coward compiled a 9-3 record with a league-best 107 strikeouts and 1.73 earned run average (ERA) to earn second-team all-region recognition. The 2000 first team All-ODAC honoree set school records for complete games (10) and shutouts (5) in a season and tossed the Quakers' first no-hitter since 1972 with a seven-inning, 11-strikeout gem in a 1-0 league win over Eastern Mennonite March 18. The right-hander received the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball News National Pitcher of the Week and ODAC Player of the Week awards for his performance. Coward ranked among the NCAA Division III leaders in ERA and strikeouts per nine innings through games of May 8. He became the third player to strikeout 300 batters in his career and graduated with a 23-20 record in four seasons. His 24 complete games and 10.01 strikeouts per nine innings stand as Guilford career records.

Moore and Coward helped Coach Gene Baker's club to a 25-18 record, the fifth-best season in school history. Guilford posted a 10-6 ODAC mark and reached the four-team league tournament for the second time in three seasons, finishing third. The Quakers expect 17 letter winners back for the 2001 campaign.
