QUAKERS LAND FOUR ON ALL-ODAC BASEBALL SQUAD
Greensboro, NC (05-05-00) -- Guilford College seniors Chad Coward (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) and Kevin Moore (Colfax, NC/Southwest Guilford) earned first team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball honors, the league announced Friday. Sophomore Tim Huie (Oviedo, FL/Oviedo) and junior Eric Pelletier (S. Deerfield, MA/Northfield-Mt. Hermon) picked up second team laurels. Guilford's four honorees marked the program's most all-league picks since joining the league in 1992.
Coward, a right-handed starting pitcher, enjoyed the finest season of his career with a 9-3 record and a 1.73 earned run average. He threw a 10 complete games and five shutouts, both school records, and recorded Guilford's first no-hitter since 1972 with a 1-0 win over Eastern Mennonite March 18. Opponents hit just .167 against Coward in 83.0 innings. He fanned a career-high 107 batter to become the fourth player to reach the 100-strikeout plateau in a single season. The professional prospect concluded his career ranked among Guilford's all-time leaders in wins (23), appearances (60), innings pitched (286.2) and strikeouts (319). His 24 complete games and 10.01 strikeouts per game marks are Guilford records.
Moore received his second first-team honor after leading the Quakers and ranking among the league leaders with a .406 batting average, plus 12 home runs, 44 runs batted in (RBI) and 45 runs scored. He led the league in homers and total bases (103). The left fielder picked up his third career ODAC Player of the Week prize in March and tied his own school record with three home runs in a March 10 win over Southern Virginia. He leaves Guilford as the school's all-time leader in hits (192), runs (141), RBI (157), doubles (37) and home runs (39). Moore hit .347 for his career with a .637 career slugging percentage.
Huie made an impressive debut in his first season after transferring from Division II Pfeiffer. The third baseman finished second to Moore with a .346 batting average and ranked second on the team with nine doubles and 47 hits. Huie led Guilford's batters in ODAC games with a .360 batting average and slammed a walkoff home run in the Quakers' 10-inning league win over Randolph-Macon April 8. He had 13 multi-hit games in 2000, second only to Moore's 18 multi-hit contests.
Pelletier hit .250 with eight home runs and 29 RBI in 34 games. His eight homers rank 10th on Guilford's single-season list and give him 15 for his career, the ninth-best figure in school history. The 6-5 designated hitter batted .282 with three home runs and nine RBI in 14 conference contests. Pelletier enjoyed a nine-game hitting streak in March which included a 5-7 effort with four RBI, two doubles and a homer in a doubleheader sweep of ODAC rival Washington and Lee.
Coach Gene Baker's Quakers' finished with a 25-18 overall record, the program's fifth-winningest season in school history. Guilford went 10-6 in the league and took third at the ODAC Tournament April 28-30 in Lynchburg, VA. The Quakers lose four graduating seniors, including Coward and Moore, but expect 17 letter winners back next season.
