GUILFORD'S COWARD NAMED NATIONAL BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Greensboro, NC (03/21/00) -- Collegiate Baseball Newspaper selected Guilford College senior Chad Coward (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) as one of its two Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week. The 6-3 right-hander walked one and tied his personal best with 11 strikeouts in seven innings of work. He faced 24 batters, three above the minimum, and lowered opponents' batting average against him this year to a league-low .123.

Coward's fourth complete-game win of the season raised his record to 4-1 and lowered his earned run average to 1.69, the fourth-lowest figure in the league. He has a team-high 40 strikeouts in 32 innings this season and has walked 14. The senior ranks third on Guilford's career strikeouts list with 252 and stands fourth on the school's career innings pitched list with 235.2.

Head coach Gene Baker's Quakers are in the midst of an 11-game winning streak and share first place in the ODAC standings with a perfect 4-0 mark headed into league contests with Lynchburg (3/22) and Virginia Wesleyan (3/25), the nation's fourth-ranked Division III team in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.
