Chris Phaup's single scored Jeremy Elliott from second base in the bottom of the 11th inning and gave Christopher Newport a 2-1 win over Thomas More in the final game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Tournament in Hickory, NC, May 18. The Captains went unbeaten in four regional tournament games and earned their second straight trip to the 2003 Division III Baseball Championship Series in Grand Chute, WI, May 23-27.

Christopher Newport pitcher Eben Brower, who fanned 11 in 10 innings in the championship game, won the tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Cary Bruner (P), Chris Phaup (3B), and Matt Turner (OF). Other all-tournament selections included: Fred Reiss (C, Thomas More), Kevin Bundy (1B, Averett), Brandon Hill (2B, Va. Wesleyan), Paul Johnson (SS, Va. Wesleyan), Noah Welte (OF, Thomas More), Eddie Guessford (OF, Averett) and Gene Yost (DH, Averett).
