The essence of this project is very simple. This paper by Bodhan Paczynski in 1986 explains how to calculate the magnification of a star as a lensing object like a black hole passes in front of it. This paper by Fukui et al. (2007) describe just such an event. Compare Figure 3 in Fukui et al. with Figure 2 in Paczynski. Fukui et al. claim that the curved black line in their Figure 3 comes from the best-fit parameters they list in Table 2, when they apply the model described by Paczyncski.
What I want you to do is take Fukai's best-fit parameters, plug them into Paczynski's formulae, and verify that the resulting curve actually does look like what Fukui et al. show in Figure 3. Be quantitative in your comparison. You may want to use ImageJ with a screen capture of Figure 3 so you can overplot in Matlab your calculations with points from Figure 3 in the paper.
