A Message to the Youth

Reality and Denial

For the past year students from Guilford College have been working with inmates at the Guilford County Correctional Facility at McCleansville. Over the last three months I have collaborated with these men in an effort to produce this body of work. What you will find here is a document aimed at discouraging at risk youth from following the wrong path.

The background that you see is from inside solitary confinement at McCleansville. The light that you see in the picture is the only light that is available during the day, imagine what it would be like at night. I stood alone in this cage for a maximum of 5 minutes, and found that even this was too much. As the gaurd opened the cell I had to think of the men who have stayed in this dark, cramped, closet sized room, for weeks upon weeks. Also I could not help but to think of all of the young men who are on course to spend some time in this room.
