During the last weekend of June, alumni, faculty and friends spent a transcendent weekend touring Vermont's Lake Champlain Islands by bicycle. The two-day tour, organized and led by staff from the Discovery Bicycle Tour company, featured scenic (and mostly flat) routes around all four of the islands. The routes included stops at a petting zoo; a 17th-century chapel; a winery; several breathtaking vista points of Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains; and, of course, a Saturday night tango dancing demonstration. The days began and ended with delicious meals at the North Hero House Inn, where participants relived the day's events, talked about Guilford, and got to know the other tour participants.
As participant Donna Crane '90 said, "making new friends is just as good as seeing the ones you already know. It felt good to spend time with people who could share stories with me about what were some of the best years of my life. At the same time, it was not some creaky nostalgia wagon. Having undertaken this trip mostly as a social excursion, I wound up exceeding my own expectations of what I was capable of doing, seeing some amazing scenery, and re-appreciating Guilford for choosing such a cool program for alums."
The setting, weather, and professionalism of the tour guides all made the experience a great way for alums to reconnect to each other and to Guilford. The weekend ended far too soon!
