Senior Director of Philanthropy LaDaniel Gatling II, a fundraising professional at Guilford since 2007, will become associate vice president for philanthropy on Aug. 1.
He succeeds Leigh McIlwain, who is leaving the College July 31 after nine years to take a leadership position in Institutional Advancement at Salem Academy & College in Winston-Salem.
“Danny Gatling is ready to take Guilford College to the next level of donor engagement,” Vice President for Advancement Mike Poston said. “He is laser focused on continuing to build a solid culture of philanthropy with all of our constituents, especially alumni.
“Leigh McIlwain was a real asset to us during our Advancing Excellence Campaign and has fostered many strong relationships for Guilford since 2005. I am proud to have worked with Leigh, and proud and grateful to have Danny as one of my key team members.”
The associate vice president for philanthropy manages the philanthropy division within the Office of Advancement. The division encompasses three primary units: major gifts, planned gifts, and corporate & foundation relations and government grants; annual giving; and donor relations.
Danny joined Guilford in December 2007 as regional director of philanthropy and became senior director of philanthropy in January 2009.
He has worked in higher education fundraising since 2001, holding positions at Bennett College and North Carolina A&T State University. Earlier in his career, he worked in financial services with Merrill Lynch and Primerica Financial Services.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering at North Carolina A&T State University and a master’s degree in philanthropic studies at Indiana University.
