Sophie’s journey to Harvard Divinity School began after enrolling in a Women in Tibetan Buddhism class due to a scheduling conflict.

Four years later, Sophie developed a fascination with Chinese and Tibetan cultures, experienced a study abroad trip to southwest China and will be enrolled at Harvard Divinity School to pursue a master’s degree in theological studies in the fall.

The class, taught by Associate Professor of Religious Studies Eric Mortensen, inspired Sophie to learn more about Asia and focus her studies on the area.

After Harvard, Sophie’s plan is to find a job in Asia and work abroad for a few years so she can develop her language skills. Inspired by her professors, Sophie plans to pursue a Ph.D. and become a professor at a small, liberal arts college like Guilford. “Some of my greatest joys have come from teaching others, and I know this is a career that I will likely end up in,” Sophie says.
