Lisa Rice Hayes ’80 of Hanover, Md., writes that her son Ethan is a sophomore studying wildlife and fishery resources. He received an associate’s degree from the local community college.

Ray McCartney ’80 has marked his 12th season at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., and his 18th year with head coach Jim Grobe. Famous for his tireless dedication to recruiting, Ray coaches the defensive line as well as coordinating recruiting. He is affectionately known throughout college football as “Coach Mac.”

Don ’81 and Linda Rice Thorup ’82 of Yadkinville, N.C., attended the wedding of Marko Mandalinic ’14 and Helen Robare ’14 in Clyde, N.Y., July 3, 2012. Don was best man and Helen’s sister Susan Robare ’12 was in attendance. Marko’s family was Skyped in from Bosnia. Don and Linda were Marko’s host parents for his senior year at Forsyth Country Day School.

Lisa Kurkjian Cox ’82 of Rancho de Taos, N.M., works in an elementary school. She is the proud mom of three children, ages 5, 7 and 10.

Randy Doss ’82, former vice president for enrollment services at Guilford College, is director of admission and enrollment at Greensboro Day School, a private, highly selective independent school for pre-kindergarten through 12th graders. Before coming to Guilford, Randy was VP of admissions at Greensboro College. He is a former president of the Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (CACRAO) and a nationally known speaker who now serves on the National Association of Collegiate Admission Counseling (NACAC) commission on international student recruitment.

Margaret “Meg” Bosley Breeden ’83 of Falls Church, Va., is working on her master’s practicum at George Mason University. She plans to graduate in 2013.

Jayne Mardock ’85 was married to Rick Cabigas on July 11, 2012, in Charleston. The couple is living in Tacoma Park, Md.

Peer Lance Plaut ’85 of Greensboro has acquired ownership of Single Book Lovers, which was started by Friend Ruth Leach in 1970 as a snail-mail newsletter helping single men and women to connect. Over 40 years later, SBL continues to work as a proven method for cultured singles to get acquainted. Peer is in the process of merging Quaker Singles and Single Book Lovers into one organization hosted at

David Tomlin ’85, former headmaster at New Garden Friends School in Greensboro, has moved to Cedar Key, Fla., a fishing village of 800 people. He is working at Kona Joe’s as well as managing four people. He plans to serve coffee, make grocery store runs, take pictures of sunrises on Back Bayou, kayak and play golf. David’s wife Carrie is teaching in the area.

Marty Hemric ’86 of Boone, N.C., has been named superintendent of the year for the 13-member school systems of the Northwestern Regional Education Service Alliance. He is superintendent of the Wilkes County (N.C.) schools.

Tom O’Connell ’87 of Dallastown, Pa., climbed to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in June 2012. This was his second climb in support of the Claudio Reyna Foundation of which Tom is a member of the Board of Directors. The foundation was set up to inspire underserved youth in urban communities with positive experiences through soccer, education and community involvement in hopes of growing healthy bodies, minds and spirits.

James Kohl ’88 of Las Vegas has been named to Mountain States Super Lawyers 2013. He is with Howard & Howard attorneys in the area of business litigation. James was named to the 2012 Mountain States Super Lawyers through a survey by Law & Politics. He was selected through a process that included peer evaluation and independent research.

Richard “Rich” Thatcher ’88 graduated from the Institute of Culinary Education and plans to open a brewery in New York.

Jon Wilbur Englestad ’89 and wife Rena are living in Fort Worth, Texas, where he is working for Williamson-Dickie.
