Thell Overman ’38, teacher and athletic director at Wallace-Rose Hill High School, posthumously entered the Greater Wilmington (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame on May 5, 2013. He already belonged to the N.C. High School Athletic Association, N.C. Football Coaches Association, N.C. Athletic Directors Association and Guilford College halls of fame. For a generation of athletes in Wallace and Duplin counties, Thell remains the gold standard of high school coaches. In 1950, he designed and supervised the construction of American Legion Stadium, which was named in his honor in 1992. Thell was a three-sport athlete for Guilford, where he received degrees in political science and history before he entered graduate school at UNC-Chapel Hill. He died in 2000.
