Growing up on a farm has fostered attributes that make me an efficient and thoughtful worker. Three different aspects of the experience of growing up on a farm are: responsibility, decision making, and hard work.
I grew up having chores and tasks that if done incorrectly or if I blew off would have major implications, such as feeding or checking fencerows. From this I have gained a sense of importance of responsibility and to follow through with what I say I will do.
Working on a farm there are numerous problems with multiple solutions and tasks with numerous processes to complete them. Over the years I have gained a knack to complete these tasks efficiently and with quality products. Now being a young adult I have more recently been part of more financial and business aspects of the farm. I have been able to make decisions with huge financial contingencies and bring in aspects from school such as economics, environmentalism and justice.
I love to work as well. I find something very satisfying out of making my body do physical work and seeing very tangible products of that work. In school I always look forward to breaks when I could go home and do farm work with my hands. I feel that work is important for people to do, it is important to get dirty and sweat some. It is always enjoyable for me to go back to the farm and be surrounded by structures and products of my family’s work and decisions and to know that I have played a part in all that I see.
