Skills and Competencies

Writing

  • Received solid A’s on all papers written in high school and college

  • Gained experience with various forms of writing including literary analysis, research papers, argumentative essays, memoirs, reflection pieces, and short stories through high school and college level courses

Research

  • Performed extensive library/internet research for paper on Monroe Doctrine and U.S. involvement in Latin America
  • Explored community resources and needs in order to improve effectiveness of service in City Year
  • Conducted phone interviews of people in various positions at non-profit organizations for vocational research project

  Quantitative Skills

  • Tested out of college quantitative requirement

  Oral Skills

  • Participated in numerous presentations about various aspects of City Year and service to sponsors, community liaisons, and fellow corps members
  • Led hour long discussion on John Woolman and his significance in Quakerism
  • Gave 15 minute presentation on results of vocational research project

  Information Technology

  • Accumulated knowledge of Word, Excel, and Internet navigation through repeated experience with these programs
  • Attended training on how to use Power Point and Photo Shop

  Leadership Skills

  • Led diverse groups of adults and children in landscaping, painting, and rehabilitation and other physical service projects

  • Facilitated a weekly student leadership club for 5th graders

  • Led fellow corps members in various service initiatives while at City Year

  People Skills

  • Maintained honest and open relationship with teachers throughout high school and college, resulting in more leniency and freedom to do assignments in my own way and at my own pace
  • Developed people skills further through relationships with service partners, corporate sponsors, fellow corps members, and students I worked with while at City Year

  Planning Skills

  • Relied heavily on (and improved) time management skills throughout academic career as well as in City Year where I had to follow through on many different service initiatives at the same time
  • Commended for my abilities to think strategically and account for all potential problems in service initiatives

  • Followed-through on all school assignments, service initiatives, and personal goals
  • Picked up the slack in many situations where fellow City Year corps members weren’t doing there parts

  • Learned how to think outside the box to account for different learning styles among students, as well as in response to problems in all areas of service
