Senior Thesis Artist's Statement
This body of work deals with objects and memories of childhood
discipline and obedience. The first group is a series of three, large-scaled prints which
focus on objects used to discipline children. I chose to intensify their connotation by
rendering them on a large scale and placing these objects centrally. I further layered
textural surfaces, text, and animal images to give a serious issue a sense of sarcasm and
humor. These prints focus on authority and conduct and how I dealt with each as a child
and how they have continued to affect me into my adulthood.
The second set of prints are objects which belonged to my grandmother (Mammaw) and
places in her old home. I have juxtaposed places with objects associated with control and
authority and created relationships between the two. These prints concern gaining
permission, obedience, boundaries, and limitations and my unending search for the key in
life.
All of these prints are metaphors for self and personal life experiences.
