Writing

. Writing intensive classes I’ve taken at Guilford: Historical Perspective 250 "Music and Social Conflict," Religion 103 "Voices of the Black Freedom Movement," English 150, "Many Voices." These classes required nearly one short paper every week and several longer papers that were usually ten to fifteen pages in length. In my studies, I’ve learned how to use APA format as well as MLA format. In high school, I took AP British Literature.

Research

My First Year Experience course, "A Fair Tax," involved researching the history of taxation, as well as researching current systems of taxation. My Historical Perspective course, "Music and Social Conflict," required a large amount of research. I had to research music, in audio and text formats, as well as the historical documents from, and about, World War II. I will be taking Research Methods in Psychology in the fall of 2001.

Oral

I’ve given oral presentations in several classes. I’ve taken courses on communication, which incorporated oral communication skills into the syllabus. My duties as a tour guide also require oral communication competence. I have practiced my oral communication and interpersonal skills often in Senate meetings I’ve attended for the past two years.

Information Technology

I’m proficient using Microsoft Word and Excel. I’ve learned to install hardware components necessary for using a LAN. I’ve also learned to develop web pages in this electronic portfolio class.

Quantitative

I placed out of the Mathematics Competency test given to me in my first year at Guilford. My brief time as an accounting major required me to learn several different operations and procedures for inventory tracking, bookkeeping, and taxation. The associated classes are: FYE 101, Acct 201 and 301. The statistical requirements of Research Methods in Psychology should also further my quantitative skills.
