Burg fondly remembers art professor Roy Nydorf and Terry Hammond '81, director and curator of the art gallery. "I think the etching class with him was probably the most fun class I ever had. It was more collaborative. Everyone would print together," he said. Students produced a class portfolio where every student had a print made by every other student in the class. Burg was a teaching assistant in one of Nydorf 's classes. This experience later helped him teach an undergraduate class in 3-D modeling software at Pratt. Burg said he was also greatly affected by the library art gallery and community created by Hammond, especially the alumni art exchange.
Other faculty who influenced Burg include Rudy Behar, Dave Limburg and study abroad professor Dieter Kuehnel. "A lot of my favorite classes were English. Rudy Behar was my English professor for First Year Writing and several other classes. He was terrific. Dave Limburg was faculty for Munich study abroad—just an amazing professor. Dieter deepened my appreciation for looking at art and going to museums. I liked drawing and painting but was so connected to the history of art," he said. His senior thesis at Guilford was greatly influenced by the art he saw during his study abroad semester in Munich. This was his first time in a big city and helped prepare him for living in New York City while attending Pratt.
While at Guilford, Burg had an internship at a local design company where he learned the technical skills of computer art. Much of what he learned was repeated his first semester at Pratt. He has also done freelance work for McGraw Hill illustrating children's science books. "I got a really strong fine arts background from Guilford. It's easier to learn art on a computer when you don't have to learn art too," he said.
