RESIDENCE LIFE MISSION

The Department of Residence Life seeks to provide a safe and viable living and learning atmosphere for all residential students and to foster community and leadership. Residence Life provides a clean, comfortable, well-maintained and secure campus living environment that enhances collaboration, community, programming and scholarship between and among students, faculty and the staff, while expecting students to accept responsibility for their role in creating a positive living environment.

Student hall directors (HDs), resident advisors (RAs) and professional residence life staff members live in the residence halls and student apartments, working to create a positive environment. The Residence Life Office of Guilford College for 2007-2008 is comprised of 5 professional staff, 5 professional on-duty staff, 31 Resident Advisors, and 6 Hall Directors!  We serve an on-campus population of over 1000 in 8 residence halls and 4 on-campus houses!

The staff is readily available for support, advising, programming and introducing residents to the many resources of the College.

The residence halls are a living and learning environment designed to promote community among the residents. Guilford College is a residential college and all traditional age students under the age of 23 are required to live on campus unless granted permission to live off campus based on the criteria and guidelines set by the Office for Campus Life.

  • vending machines
  • bath facilities shared by floor residents in central locations
  • lounges and kitchenettes

What's in the Room?

  • twin bed (extra long sheets)
  • desk with chair
  • dresser (in Milner, two students may share a dresser)
  • closet or wardrobe
  • window blinds
  • network computing access in all traditional residence halls and apartments
  • local telephone - students in double rooms will share one line and those in apartments or houses will share one line per apartment or house.
  • voice mail access - All students have access to their own voicemail and should contact IT&S to set it up. We encourage students to set up a voicemail so that the college has a way to contact students other than email.
  • cable television access - one cable TV outlet per room (see IT&S for more information)
  • sinks in the rooms in English

Meal Plans

Students are responsible for selecting their own meal plan for the academic year when they complete their online housing application in Bannerweb. First year students are required to choose from the 19 meal plan or 14 meals/$175 grill cash. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors who live in traditional halls may choose from either the 19 meals, 14 meals/$175 grill cash or 10 meals/$175. Only the students who live in apartments or theme houses may elect not to participate in a meal plan, but may also opt to choose the 5 meal alternative, 10, 14, or 19 meal plans. Meal plan changes are only accepted through the first week of classes each semester. Currently, students who live off campus are not eligible for any one of the traditional meal plans offered to residential students. Off campus students may put money onto their student IDs through the Quaker Card Office.

For further information about the Dining Hall options, go to Room and Board Rates or Meal Plans. Inquiries may also be directed to the Residence Life Office.

Mail Service

The Student Post Office will accept shipped items for students arriving to campus at the start of a semester. In addition to the address, boxes should also indicate it is for a student. Student box numbers are obtained through the Registrar's Office. How does a student write their return mailing address? How does a student receive packages from home? For information regarding the Student Post Office, please visit the Resource Guide in the Guilford College Student Handbook.

Summer Storage Program

The college does not offer any summer storage on campus. Students are encouraged to contact Two Men and a Truck (who will pick-up your belongings) at 336-297-1500 or any other the self-serve mini-storage places located close to the college.

What to Bring and What to Leave at Home

The residence halls are designed to offer students as many of the amenities of home as possible, such as internet network access, cable TV and local telephone service. However, to make your living situation more comfortable and well-prepared for the school year here is a list of suggested items to bring: desk lamp, land telephone (it is important to have a land line for voicemail messages.), with pre-paid calling cards, stapler, pens/pencils, tape, paper clips, stationery, notebooks, stamps, white out, grounded power strips (UL approved only-no extension cords), mirror (for back of door), dishes, refrigerator (max. size 4 cubic feet), small microwave, folding laundry rack, umbrella, plants, "wall saver" sticky tack (for hanging posters, etc.), computer, alarm clock, bedspread, extra-long twin bed sheets, blankets, mattress cover, pillow, towels, scatter rugs, iron, flashlight & batteries, laundry basket, detergent, bulletin/eraser board, wastepaper basket, dustbuster/small vacuum, T.V., stereo headphones, calculator, can opener, bucket for toiletries, shower shoes and personal items.

How to Protect Your Personal Property

Always keep your room locked, but in the event something happens to your personal property (i.e., theft, fire, accidents); it's always better to be safe than sorry because the college does not assume the liability. Residence Life recommends you check with your family's home owner's insurance policy to see if you are covered in the event something happens. If you are not covered by home owner's, you should invest in renter's insurance or use National Student Services, Inc. NSSI provides a student personal property plan and they can be found at www.nssinc.com.

Room Keys and Lost Keys

At check-in, each student is issued a key to his or her room which they are responsible for keeping as long as they are assigned to a room. In the event a student moves out of a room, the key is to be returned to Residence Life. Failure to do so will result in an improper check-out fine and the cost to replace the lock. If a student loses a key, report it to Residence Life immediately. A temporary key will be issued and the lock will be changed. The cost to recore a lock and new key is $75.00. If there is a problem after business hours, contact Public Safety at 316-2909.

Some Items are not Permitted in Your Room, So Leave Behind

Candles, incense, pets that do not live in water (fish in tanks with less than 10 gallon capacity are the only pets permitted), extension cords, open-coil cooking appliances (including toasters, toaster ovens, hot plates, etc.), grills and live cut trees. Halogen lamps and decorative string lights (like holiday tree lights) are prohibited as they create a fire hazard. A complete list of prohibited items is included in the Residence Hall Contract.

Living with a Roommate

Each set of roommates, suitemates or housemates are encouraged to complete a Lifestyle Agreement Form. This can be obtained from your RA or HD. This agreement helps residents delineate responsibilities and fosters mutual respect. Your RA or HD will maintain the agreements and should be consulted when a dispute arises. The agreement can be revisited and revised upon agreement of all of those who have signed it or when new residents move in. If a conflict arises, Residence Life staff is available for roommate conflict mediation. If issues cannot be resolved and become severe, one person may be asked to move to a different room. Information about the room change process and application may be obtained through the RA, HD or Area Coordinator.

Maintenance Repairs/Issues

For emergency repairs (i.e., water leaks, power outtages, heating and air), contact Facilities directly at 316-2902 and after hours or weekends contact Public Safety at 316-2909.
