Fall Break Residence Hall Closing Notice
Fall Break will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16th, 2009 and end at 9:00am on Sunday, October 25th, 2009. Guilford College residence halls are officially closed during this time, although student athletes and students who have a distance to travel will be allowed to stay. PLEASE NOTE: If you plan to stay on campus at any point during this break (including student athletes), whether it’s in a residence hall, an apartment, or a theme house, you must register with the Office for Campus Life.
STAYING OVER THE BREAK - The “Residence Hall Contract for Staying On-Campus during Guilford College Breaks” is available in the Office for Campus Life on the 2nd floor of Founders Hall. Students who stay on campus and fail to register by the deadline will be referred to the Guilford College judicial system and face removal from campus for the remainder of the Fall Break period. The registration deadline is 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 15th. You must register to stay in person (your signature is required) – email or telephone registration will not be accepted.
GUILFORD DINING - There is limited food service provided after 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16th until 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 25th. The dining hall will be available for lunch from 11:30am - 1:30pm and for dinner from 4:30pm until 6:30pm only. The dining hall will accept cash, Quaker cards and credit cards only. Guilford dining plans may not be used during the break - students are responsible for their own meals.
CAMPUS SAFETY - Your assistance is needed in maintaining a safe and secure environment by not propping open outside doors, closing and locking your room windows, reporting any strangers on your floor to the Hall Director or Public Safety, and keeping your room door locked. If you are not here during the break, it is also suggested that you remove any valuables from your room. Although the college provides Public Safety coverage during break periods, it cannot assume any liability for loss or damage due to theft.
ROOM CHECKS - On Monday, October 19th, each room will be entered by residence life personnel to ensure compliance with health and safety standards as described in the Guilford College Student Handbook. All residents need to prepare your living space for the health and safety checks (whether you are here or not). This means your room and common areas should be neat and tidy and ALL garbage and recyclables removed. The room checks should be completed by late Monday afternoon. Failure to comply with these standards will result in confiscation of illegal items and/or fines and/or judicial charges. For further and helpful information, please read the Residence Hall Information and Regulations of the Guilford College Student Handbook available on the website at: http://www.guilford.edu/about_guilford/values/handbook/res_hall.html.
Please complete the following health and safety measures:
- Clean up your room and floor– which means throw away perishable food and trash, wash dirty plates and cups, put away clothes, shoes, papers and anything else left on the floor that would hinder the inspection conducted by the Residence Life staff.
- Make sure common areas (living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, etc.) in the suites and apartments and houses are clean, neat and in order.
- Refrigerators and aquariums may be left plugged in during the break.
- Remove all perishable food items from your room or kitchen because they attract insects.
- If you leave, turn off or unplug your alarm clock and any other electronic devices.
- Close and lock room window(s) if you are not there.
- Close drapes/pull blinds if you are gone.
- Empty all trash and recycling from your room. Trash found inside and outside of an apartment/house or a suite is the responsibility of all the residents of the apartment/house or suite.
- Turn off room lights and LOCK room/suite/apartment/house door(s).
If you have any questions, please speak to your RA/ Hall Director or contact the Residence Life office at reslife@guilford.edu. Thanks for your cooperation and we hope you have a safe and restful break!
