Meal Plan Exemption Process

Guilford is a residential college requiring students who live on campus to eat on campus. This policy allows for few, if any, exceptions. Those who request an exemption for the college's board plan (meals) may complete the Meal Plan Exemption Request form. Please note that meal exemption requests will only be considered for those who demonstrate a critical need to be off the meal plan and provide appropriate documentation.

Exemption requests are reviewed once each semester.

Fall semester:

  • Exemption request will be reviewed between August 20, 2007 - September 3, 2007.
  • Exemption request must be received by September 3, 2007.
  • Notification via email by September 10, 2007.

Spring semester:

  • Exemption request will be reviewed between January 14, 2008 - January 28, 2008.
  • Exemption request must be received by January 28, 2008.
  • Notification via email by February 4, 2008.

Applications received after the deadline(s) will not be considered until the next semester.
NOTE:  Exemption is not guaranteed and the total room, board, and fees are due by the scheduled payment deadline(s) as outlined by the Office of Student Accounts. Failure to make timely payment may result in a student's withdrawal from the college or inability to register for classes or housing.

The meal exemption process is as follows:

  1. Once documentation is received in the office for campus life, the director of student health and/or dietician will review the request and speak to the student's physician and/or dietician (if necessary).
  2. In August and January, individual appointments will be scheduled for the student to meet with the college's dietician, if necessary. The student will be contacted through their Guilford College email account regarding the scheduling of the appointment.
  3. The college's dietician will make a recommendation regarding the ability of the food service program to meet the special dietary needs of the student requesting the meal plan exemption. The recommendation may be that the food service program:
    • can meet most of the needs and will make special arrangements for those it cannot meet, in which case the student will not be exempt from the meal plan, or
    • cannot meet the special dietary needs of the student requesting the meal plan exemption in which case the student will be exempt from the meal plan and the student's tuition, room, board and fee charges will be adjusted.

You will be notified via email regarding your exemption and whether it has been approved, denied or requires follow up with the physician/dietician.
