Entry Into Residence Hall Areas
As a private institution, Guilford College has the right to enter any residential room to address maintenance concerns, conduct routine health and safety checks and initiate room searches if warranted. *Entrance into any residential room/apartment/suite will follow the protocol established by the Office for Campus Life and the Department of Public Safety and will be categorized by the following three levels:
General Entry
A minimum 24-hour notice from a college official of inspection shall be given to the resident(s)
- Non-emergency maintenance repairs
- Periodic health and safety inspections
- Fire alarm inspections/issues
- Housekeeping
- General courtesy issues
Probable Cause (Investigative Entry)
Entry into a room based on reasonable suspicion of violations which are determined and agreed upon at routine Incident Report meetings conducted by Residential Life and Public Safety.
- Unauthorized entry, use or possession
- Theft
- Sexual misconduct
- Local, state, or federal laws
- Alcohol
- Pets
- Smoking in non-smoking residential areas
- Unregistered guests/missing persons
- Violation of NAUP (Network Acceptable Use Policy)
- Noise
Critical (Imminent Entry)
Thorough room searches may be conducted and seizure of items/evidence that are in violation of college policy. Campus Life, Public Safety and Facilities must adhere to set protocols.
- Drugs - suspected presence
- Endangerment of person(s) relating to mental/physical illness, sexual assault or assault, alcohol or drug-related illness
- Disruptive conduct/Aggressive behavior
- Fire safety
- Misuse or tampering with emergency equipment
- Local, state, or federal laws
- Weapons and fireworks
- Hazing
- Emergency maintenance repairs (including but not limited to loss of power, heat, AC, plumbing problems, etc.)
- Noise
