Fall Housing Information
Update on Housing - 8/1/07
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through the current housing situation. As we mentioned in the last email, the triple room assignments are temporary. These assignments are changing every day as students notify us that they would like to move off-campus or that they have transferred from Guilford and forgot to tell us, or they decided to study abroad in the fall, etc. Housing at this time of the year is always very much in flux and we will keep updating our rosters to make sure that as soon as spaces are available, we move students out of triple rooms and into other single or double occupancy spaces on campus. Last year we were in a similar situation to begin the school year with even more students without housing at the end of July. Please continue to check your BannerWeb account to see new updates to your housing assignment as those updates occur. Any adjustments resulting from additional spaces created by campus houses (read about the houses below) should be reflected by Monday, August 6. It is also important to note that the crunch is affecting both upper-class, and first-year, students despite rumors to the contrary. First-year students are also in triples and we are working diligently to eliminate those situations as well.
Many selective colleges face these housing challenges at the beginning of a school year. The number of first-year students who accept our offer of admission constantly changes, as does the number of upper-class students who choose to return and apply to live either on-campus or off-campus. Despite the addition of a $10 million dollar apartment complex we still find ourselves at capacity. We have increased traditional aged enrollment gradually while also becoming more selective and admitting a much lower proportion of students who apply. The challenge is getting those numbers neither too high to cause overcrowding at the beginning of the year nor too low to create too many empty spaces.
This year's housing crunch was exacerbated by more students than we expected enrolling as first-years and more students returning as upper-class students to campus housing. Just three years ago, the scenario was reversed and the College had 100 empty beds that forced budget reductions all over campus, and put adverse pressures on student fee charges and financial aid the following year.
To address our housing situation, we recently have been able to add some options, in addition to the triple rooms, and we would like to share some of them with you. At least one of our faculty houses on campus has become available in the past week and may provide some relief. Some minor renovations may be needed, but we think this option will allow us to accommodate a few students. We are also assisting students with their efforts to secure housing off-campus in nearby apartments and want to reiterate the fact that anyone choosing to live off-campus, as a result of their triple room assignment, will not have their merit aid reduced by 25%. Friendly Hills is right across the street and within walking distance, as is The Legacy. If you would like help finding a Guilford College student roommate to live with off-campus, please let us know and we will be more than happy to assist you.

PRIOR HOUSING UPDATES:
The housing process at Guilford has undergone a dramatic change as the result of an increasing demand for housing. During the spring semester returning students went through a lottery process using a new housing-based software program for the first time. New students entering Guilford for fall 2008 will also be utilizing the new housing software.
First-year students entering Guilford in August 2007 will be housed in Milner, Binford, Shore and English. Rising seniors, juniors and sophomores will select from: the student apartments, theme houses, Bryan, English, Mary Hobbs and Shore.
If you need to apply for housing, go to the Residence Life Forms to complete the process. To make any personal, hall or dining preference changes on your housing application after you have submitted your application, you will need to log back into Banner Web and go to "My Housing" where you can make any necessary changes. All students (new and returning) will be notified in late July via mail of their housing assignment along with check-in information.
Single room accommodations - Single rooms in the traditional halls (excluding apartments or theme houses) are only granted to those students approved by the ADA (American with Disabilities Act-www.guilford.edu/ada) committee. This also includes small single rooms in the traditional halls. Because of the demand for housing, small single rooms are no longer available on a first-come, first-serve basis to anyone. Students approved for a single as an accommodation will be placed first in the halls that have designated small single rooms (rooms that cannot accommodate two students). If you are approved for a single, but want to live in the apartments, you may go through the lottery process to try to obtain an apartment room, but we don't guarantee placement in the apartments if it is not a necessity. Students who may not fit the ADA criteria, but want a single room should try to get an apartment room. Single Room Application
Off- Campus - Those students who live off-campus during the 2006-2007 academic year, must reapply for off-campus for fall 2007. Information regarding the policy change is available on the website at www.guilford.edu/reslife. The off-campus application is available at www.guilford.edu/housing.
Arrival Information
For all students, you may not check-in to your room until your designated arrival date and time. There are no exceptions. At check-in, you will be given your residence hall key to begin the moving process. Students with holds placed on their student accounts will not be allowed to receive a room key until all holds are cleared with the appropriate departments, nor will they be given access to their rooms. We urge you to take care of your student account or other holds prior to your arrival. For returning students, Student Financial Services and the Registrar will be open during regular business hours (8:30am-5:00pm) on the weekdays and with abbreviated hours from 11am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday, August 18th and 19th for your convenience. The student mailroom will also be open during arrival weekend from 10am-2pm on Saturday, August 18th and from 1-3pm on Sunday, August 19th.
First-year students: If, for some unforeseen reason, you do not make it to campus before 2pm on Wednesday, August 15th, you will need to visit the Campus Life Office, 2nd floor Founders, to complete your check-in. If you arrive after 5pm, you will need to go to the Security Bubble, 1st floor Bauman, and Public Safety will let you into your room. You will need to visit the Campus Life Office as soon as possible during business hours to complete your housing check-in process. If you do not check-in, you will not have your student ID to access the dining hall.
Returning students who arrive after the designated check-in times will need to wait until the next business day or check-in time (whichever comes first) to receive a key. If you want access to your room after 5:00pm, you will need to go to the Security Bubble in Bauman, 1st floor, and Public Safety will let you into your room. You will be required to sign an agreement and will be charged $50 per night for each night you haven’t completed the check-in process with Residence Life. Keys will not be left at the Security Bubble for returning or readmitted students after business hours. Students with holds will not be given access to their rooms!
