Community Time is an hour the College sets aside each week for a campuswide activity. It’s also a good way to describe Homecoming & Family Weekend, Sept. 20-22.
For alumni, the weekend is an opportunity to connect with friends, faculty and fellow Guilfordians.
“Come back to campus not only to strengthen your relationship with the College, but to remind yourself of where you came from and who you were then,” says Karrie Manson ’82, senior director of alumni relations.
By bringing families to campus at the same time as alumni, the weekend will allow parents to learn about the larger community their children have joined.
“Families want to know their students are part of something bigger than themselves,” says James Garcia, associate director of annual giving for parent programs. “Obviously parents want to check in on a physical level, but they also will see their children falling in love with a community that few other colleges have.”
Friday’s events include an open football practice 3:30-5 p.m. at the Armfield Athletic Center, an alumni athlete reunion cookout 5-7 p.m. at the Pepsi Fan Zone at Armfield, an Inuit art exhibit and talk at 7:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Room of Hege Library, an alumni mixer for all 5-7 p.m. at MJ’s Restaurant and a Joan Osborne in concert at Dana Auditorium at 8 p.m.
Saturday begins early at the Bryan Park Champions Course for the Annual Harvey Ljung Homecoming Golf Tournament 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Charles A. Dana Professor of Biology Lynn Moseley will lead a bird walk at 8 a.m. Alumni and families are invited to attend their choice of campus tours: an admissions tour at 9 a.m., a historical tour at 2 p.m., an Underground Railroad tour at 3 p.m. or a sustainability tour at 4 p.m.
Learn about the College’s programs through reflective presentations and conversations at the Campus Experience Presentations 10 a.m.-noon at the Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium.
Guilfordians are encouraged to visit the Guilford farm noon-2 p.m. for a lunch featuring the farm’s own produce. Alumni and families are invited to attend a fall festival and pre-game cookout at 4 p.m. on Dana Lawn, which will feature food trucks. Local produce, food and Guilford gear will be sold.
