Presidential Search Committee Named
The Board of Trustees has named a 15-member Presidential Search Committee recommended by board Chair Joseph M. Bryan Jr.
The search committee will identify candidates to succeed President Kent Chabotar, who has served since 2002 and will retire June 30, 2014.
Trustee Carole Bruce chairs the committee, which includes five trustees and 10 members representing faculty, staff, students, alumni and volunteer board leaders. Carole is a partner with Smith Moore Leatherwood and chair of the board’s Finance Committee.
The search committee will begin its work immediately, Carole said. As a committee of the Board of Trustees, its role is to screen applicants and recommend finalists. The board itself has the ultimate responsibility to interview candidates and choose the next president.
“The selection of a president is probably the most important decision any board of trustees or directors makes,” Carole said.
“Our board chair, Joe Bryan, has selected a very inclusive search committee, and we will be reaching out to the campus community and other key constituent groups to gather input on qualities desired in the next president. We expect our key constituents to be engaged throughout the process, which will be a national search.”
Other trustees on the search committee are Daryle Bost ’93, Vic Cochran ’71, Ed Winslow and Kathy Coe.
Daryle is a sales director for Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice, a business law firm, and chair of the board’s Advancement Committee. Vic is president and owner of Sharp-Carter Corp. and will be returning to the board in October. Ed, the board’s chair-elect, is managing partner of the Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard law firm. Kathy is a retired former pastor of Jamestown Friends Meeting and a trustee emerita.
Other members of the search committee were selected by Joe from nominations submitted by campus constituency groups including faculty, senior staff, staff association, student governments and the alumni association.
Faculty members on the committee are Jim Hood ’79, professor of English; Barbara Lawrence, assistant professor of justice and policy studies; and Kami Rowan, associate professor of music.
Administration and staff members on the committee are Jon Varnell, vice president for administration; Sandy Pearman ’80, director of enrollment information (Admission and Financial Aid); and Suzanne Sullivan, assistant director of communications and marketing-outreach (Advancement).
Students on the committee are Lyes Benarbane ’14 and Jessica Hilliard ’15, who is treasurer of the CCE (adult) Student Government Association.
Volunteer board leaders on the committee are Bradley Anderson ’77, president-elect of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, and Paul Kress ’82, chair of the Board of Visitors. Bradley is the retired fire chief of Columbia, S.C., and Paul is a commercial banker with Wells Fargo.
Joyce Eaton, executive associate to the president, is committee liaison.
