Freddy Gomez Named Student-Athlete of the Week
Following outstanding performances in two recent games, soccer player Freddy Gomez ’13 has been named Guilford’s Student-Athlete of the Week.
A midfielder, Freddy scored the team’s lone goal in a Sept. 25 loss to Roanoke College, and he scored two goals in a Sept. 29 victory over Shenandoah University, the seventh multiple-goal game of his career.
In the process, he moved into third place among the College’s all-time goals (37) and points (86) leaders. He also took over the lead on this year’s team with seven goals and 15 points through 10 matches. A three-time All-ODAC pick, he ranks second among conference goal and point leaders this season.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and other students.
Past committee activities have included cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
