Beard Whitlow Wins Poetry Prize
“Birthright,” a poem by Charles A. Dana Professor of English Carolyn Beard Whitlow, has won the 2012 Sonia Sanchez/Amiri Baraka Prize in Poetry.
Her poem “At the Blank Blank Bar” appears in the fall issue of storySouth. A chapbook collection of her poems, When the Wind Stills, has been selected for publication by Finishing Line Press and will be released in January.
Anna Lena Phillips ’00 presented a paper on Carolyn’s life and work entitled “Blues, Informed” as part of a panel on The Mezzo Cammin Women Poets Timeline at the Southern Women Writers Conference at Berry College, Mt. Berry, Ga., earlier this month.
Anna, winner of the conference’s 2012 Emerging Writers Award in poetry, is a founding editor of Fringe, an online journal of experimental literature.
