Ahead of the Pack

Football players returned to campus Aug. 8 – earlier than almost all of their fellow students – to prepare for the season opener Sept. 1 against crosstown rival Greensboro College.

Most of new students will move into residence halls Aug. 15-16, while most returning traditional students will do so Aug. 18-19. Classes start Aug. 20.

The 17th Annual Gate City Soup Bowl kicks off the 106th season of football at Guilford, where second-year head coach Chris Rusiewicz has 15 starters among 41 letter winners back from last year’s 2-8 team.

Sophomore defenders Robert Smith and Satiir Stevenson are two of the most decorated veterans after receiving Second Team All-ODAC recognition in 2011. Robert, a linebacker, ranked second on the team with 64 tackles, including a team-high 12½ stops behind the line. Satiir, a safety, made 51 tackles and shared the team lead with two interceptions.

Offensive lineman Faris El-Ali ’14 was a Third Team All-ODAC selection in 2011 and will serve as co-captain along with classmates Alex Smith and Kyle Ennis, and Daniel Biggerstaff ’13. Safety Hunter English ’15 is another top returner after leading the team with 65 tackles and earning Third Team All-ODAC recognition.
