Women’s Basketball to Face Centre in NCAA First Round March 2

Guilford has a basketball team competing in the NCAA Division III Championship for the seventh time in the last 12 seasons.

The women’s basketball team will play Centre College Friday, March 2, in Danville, Ky., in a first-round NCAA game that tips off at 7 p.m. or 30 minutes following the first-round game between No. 9-ranked Washington University (Mo.) and Ferrum College (Va.). The second round will be played Saturday, March 3.

Guilford is 22-6 and champion of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Centre is 24-3 and champion of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.  Washington, 20-5, was national runner-up last year and champion in 2010 and was second in the University Athletic Association this season. Ferrum is 23-5 and champion of the USA South Conference.

The Quakers earned the ODAC’s automatic NCAA bid by defeating top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College 57-40 in the conference tournament finals in Salem, Va., Feb. 26. Gabby Oglesby ’14 added ODAC Tournament MVP honors to her Player of the Year Award.

Guilford is making its third women’s NCAA tournament appearance and first since 2002. The championship bracket is available on the NCAA website.

In addition to women’s basketball NCAA appearances in 2001, 2002 and 2012, the men’s basketball team appeared in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, finishing third nationally in 2009 and 2010.
