“Winter Starlight” Choral, Jazz Concert is Dec. 4

The College Choir and Jazz Ensemble will present “Winter Starlight,” a free, public concert of seasonal music at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, in Dana Auditorium.

The College Choir will begin the concert with a Renaissance motet for double chorus by Tomas Luis de Victoria called “Ave Maria.” Other selections will be “Chinese Melodies: two songs on love and nature” (with solos by Lucas Blanchard-Glueckert and Bonnie Hardie); “Autumn,” a contemporary a cappella work by Finnish composer Jussi Chydenius; and a new setting of “Sure on This Shining Night” by American composer Morten Lauridsen.

The choir will finish with “The Star,” a miniature Christmas scene centered on Carl Sandburg’s poem Special Starlight. Guest narrator David Hammond, professor of theatre studies, will recite the poem, which is accompanied by three “star-themed” carols.

The second half of the program will feature the Guilford College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Drew Hays, assistant professor of music, performing “Jingle Bells,” “The Christmas Song,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Christmas Blues.”
