Observatory Program on “The Active Sun” Nov. 20

Thom Espinola will do a multimedia presentation on “The Active Sun” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, during an open house at Guilford’s Cline Observatory. Sponsored by the Department of Physics, the event is free and, weather permitting, the main telescope will be used for viewing.

Espinola will focus on the sun’s interaction with the Earth to cause phenomena such as the Northern Light, which are created when particles from the Sun interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. As the Sun approaches its maximum activity in 2012 and 2013, both the aurora and the Sun will become more interesting to observe.
