Theatre Studies Opens 2011-12 Season Nov. 4 with Company

Theatre Studies opens its 2011-12 season with Company, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. Performances are Nov. 4-5 and 10-12 at 8 p.m. in Sternberger Auditorium, located in Founders Hall.

Company follows the life of Bobby, a committed bachelor celebrating his 35th birthday with the five married couples who are his best friends.  A series of vignettes show Bobby’s interactions with these friends and three ex-girlfriends, all of whom urge him to settle down into traditional married life. Finally, Company is the story of a man who weighs the fun of bachelorhood against the benefits of deeper intimacy.

Company won six Tony Awards in 1971, notably for Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. Broadway revivals of “Company” won Tony Awards in 1996 and 2007.

Guilford’s production is a collaboration between the departments of Theatre Studies and Music with stage direction by Jack Zerbe, Professor and Chair of Theatre, and musical direction by Jim Bumgardner, instructor of Music. Costume design is by Mahealani Jones and lighting design is by Roslyn Fulton-Dahlie, instructors of design. Set design is by guest artist Jayme Mellema.

Tickets are $3 for Guilford College students, faculty, and staff. All other tickets are $5. For tickets and more information, visit the Guilford College Theatre Studies website.
