Guilford Again Included in Princeton Review’s Green Guide
For the second year, The Princeton Review has named Guilford College one of the most environmentally responsible schools in the United States and Canada. The education service included Guilford in its free downloadable book, “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition.”
The Princeton Review partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council to profile colleges and universities that demonstrate a notable commitment to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation. The schools were selected for the guide based on a survey of administrators at hundreds of colleges that the company polled in 2010 about their school’s sustainability initiatives.
Guilford is one of only 10 colleges in North Carolina appearing in the guide. Its 94 “green rating” ranks Guilford fifth in the state. Guilford also appeared in last year’s guide with a green rating of 95.
Since 1998, the College has required students to fulfill a social justice and environmental responsibility course requirement, and offers a popular environmental studies major. Guilford’s administration is committed to sustainability, joining the American Colleges and Universities Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) in 2007. Green projects include the LEED Silver renovation of historic Archdale Hall, the installation of 200 solar thermal hot water panels, campus bike co-op and on-campus repair shop, and student-managed community gardens.
