Learning to Change Lives

Guilford College has a long tradition of concern for the wider community. Since the arrival of the Bonner Scholars Program on our campus 20 years ago, we have been challenged to develop a program to support 60 Bonner Scholars who perform over 12,000 hours of community service each semester. Our 60 Bonners form a committed corps with an estimated 300 additional students joining them in the wider community each semester with a weekly service commitment.

Guilford is an original member of the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation’s Bonner Scholarship program, and one of 23 colleges in the United States to be selected. The Bonner Scholarship program’s mission is to transform the lives of students and their campuses and communities through community service.

Accepted students receive scholarship funds and extensive training in return for their commitment to the four-year program. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

The Bonner Foundation has also developed a network of non-profit organizations, called Bonner Partners, who are specifically interested in working with Bonner Scholars through internships, alternative break projects and post-graduation opportunities.
